Meet Ofsted's shift of emphasis in maths

Although maths test results have improved steadily in recent years, Ofsted is concerned that students are being taught to pass exams at the expense of their understanding of the subject. According to its recent report Mathematics: Understanding the score, in almost half of the schools inspected, maths teaching failed to engage pupils or encourage analytical thinking.

The report advocates a renewed emphasis on applied mathematics and problem solving in real-world settings. This is the main focus of Maths Puzzles for KS3/KS4, a new CD-ROM from Pearson Publishing. Containing over 80 activities, this extensive resource offers a range of open-ended tasks that are ideal for use as starters or plenaries, for group work and for independent learning.

“The best way to make sure students really understand a concept is to give them the chance to experiment and discover things for themselves. Maths Puzzles for KS3/KS4 is full of ideas and materials that will engage students of all abilities.”

James Bench-Capon, Editor
