Why not encourage your students to discover Walter's story?
Walter Hodgson was a mill worker from Preston who was conscripted at the age of 18 and sent away from his home and family to fight in France.
The Voices from the Past resource features original audio from interviews with Walter himself, allowing students to hear directly from a WW1 soldier!
David, Walter's grandson, started recording his conversations with his grandfather 30 years ago, in a pre-web, pre-smartphone era. David kept the cassettes with hours and hours of interviews with Walter. Much of this incredible material is yet to be explored and made available, and our resource focuses on some of Walter's most interesting and moving stories, tracing his journey from entering the cotton mills at 12 years of age to fighting on the fields of France to his return home after the war.
Quizzes and activities are designed to support History, English and Citizenship for KS3 and KS4, although older primary pupils may also gain a lot from Walter's story.
