Author Jeremy Sutcliffe interviewed the UK's best headteachers to find out what makes a good leader. Eight qualities emerged: vision, courage, passion, emotional intelligence, judgment, resilience, persuasion and curiosity. IoE academics came up with a different set of eight as discussed by Nick Morrison, proving that there are in fact a huge number of qualities school leaders need in order to be successful.
But how can leaders develop these qualities? How can leaders use these qualities to improve achievement and create a successful climate for learning?
We spoke to Professor Bernard Barker, Professor of Educational Leadership and Management, University of Leicester.
"Leadership of schools, parts of schools and groups of schools can be compelling and all absorbing. Whether within a school, at middle or senior level, or in headship, or across multiple schools, there are some constants: how to create a climate for sustainable improvement? How to deal with challenging behaviour, for example, from children and from staff? How to raise the game for middle and senior leaders, and how to plan for and manage succession? What to do to support, train and empower governors, and to ensure the money we have is effective in achieving the outcomes we hope to achieve?"
We've worked with Professor Barker to develop a set of CPD courses for leaders which discuss selected crucial issues, supported by educational theory and illustrated by a series of short lectures.
"School Leadership is a unique set of publications blending relevant theoretical resources with reflection on extensive leadership experience in order to challenge existing thinking, and to provide practical advice on how to address the myriad dilemmas that school leaders face on a daily basis. The aim is to support leaders in a variety of roles so that the decisions they make bring about the outcomes they desire."
We've chosen to focus on four key topics to address some of the most pressing challenges of leadership:
Organisational Climate - Create a positive climate for organisational effectiveness
Middle Leaders - Discover how to get the most out of middle leaders
Managing Difficult People - Overcome barriers to change and learn how to deal with challenging people
What Makes a Great Head - Take your leadership to the next level
School Leadership is included in our CPD Library. This is a unique set of staff development courses created by an expert team of practitioners and researchers to help colleagues develop skills, improve outcomes from CPD and free up training sessions for discussion, planning and support. Available for phones, tablets and computers, staff can access CPD wherever and whenever is convenient for them.
